This painting looks at a primitive confrontation with your past self. Deepak Chopra highlights the futility of focusing on the past in Ageless Body, Timeless Mind saying “the past is layered into us in many intricate layers. Your inner world is full of complex relationships, for it contains the past not only as it occurred but all the ways in which you would like to revise it. All the things that should have turned out differently do turn out differently in that place where you escape into fantasy, revenge, yearning, sorrow, self reproach, and guilt.” In therapy it’s starting to become clear that chronic disappointment at life’s past events has entrenched a dissatisfaction prompting the need to numb, escape and obsess about when things will eventually all be perfect. But living in this fantasy world only makes reality harder to swallow when things don’t go to plan. Read more about the Mental Health project here.
